The Economies of Regions Learning Network (ERLN), the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), the Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) and the Institute for Development Assistance Management (IDAM) based at Fort Hare University are jointly presenting a 3-day training programme focused on agricultural value chains and regional economic development for stakeholders in the Eastern Cape from 12-14 September 2016. You are invited to attend.
Purpose of programme
The aim of the training is to assist public and private sector managers as well as professionals involved in agricultural development to understand agricultural value chains, the importance of collaboration and partnership in developing competitive and inclusive value chains that maximise opportunities for regional economic development.
Effectively leveraging value chains for regional economic development is a complex process requiring coordination between multiple partners. The course will provide participants with an introductory grounding in the core issues and key constraints/enablers of value chains, a deepened understanding of the agro-food value chain, and technical and collaborative leadership skills to work effectively within this context. Lessons will be drawn from various local good practices and case studies.
The programme is aimed at officials in key provincial and municipal departments, economic development agencies and special economic zones as well as private sector role-players in agriculture and retail who have an interest in agricultural value chains in the Eastern Cape. It is preferable that a management team from a department/organisation attends, as they will benefit more from the course and find it easier to implement learning in the department. Teams of at least 3 are recommended.
What will participants gain from attending?
- Better understanding of value chains as a tool for economic development;
- Deeper appreciation of the agricultural value chain, and applicable constraints and opportunities;
- An understanding of the role of the public sector as an enabler of economic development and value chains;
- Improved skills in facilitating collaboration and partnership amongst different roleplayers;
- An opportunity to network with other practitioners operating at different points of the agricultural value chain.
There is no workshop fee to attend the event. However delegates are expected to fund their own travel, accommodation and local transport.
